The WordPress API Key I

By default, a WordPress blog installation includes a plugin called Akismet. This particular plugin is designed to deal with some of the comment spam a blog is sure to get, even if that blog is only marginally successful. While it’s really nice to see nice comments on your blog, it certainly isn’t particularly pleasant to realize that what seemed to be a nice compliment on your post is really an attempt to get some links in to all manner of sites on the web that you may well not want to be a party to. Even if those links aren’t objectionable, it still tarnishes the good feeling you could have had. Akismet saves you some of this disappointment.

To get Akismet to work, however, you need something called a WordPress API key, and to get that, you need a WordPress.com account. Fear not! This is a rather simple thing, and that API key is well worth the little bit of effort, and not only for Akismet. In part I of this article, we will explore obtaining a WordPress API key and then in Part II we will look at setting up Akismet as well as another valuable plugin that uses the WordPress API Key or two.

Moving

This word always sends a shiver down my spine. I think of hours and hours of time spent putting everything I own into easy-to-carry containers and then loading them up onto a truck so I can then drive some terrible distance where I will undo all that I had done. Usually there are crushed fingers or toes and more sore muscles than I ever believed existed in my body. Beyond that, for some reason nothing is at all the same when I get to the new place I call home and it takes months, if not longer. Some things never even come back out of the boxes they were put into.

Everybody Loves Discounts!

Am I right or am I right? This entry isn’t some bit of sales wisdom or really much about discounts at all, really. Rather, this is the first installment of my irregularly scheduled feature of Oxygen Addicts, ‘Available Domain Names’. Every once in awhile I get on a kick. Something gets in my brain and I just have to go look for domain names.

Noting how horribly difficult it can be at times to find a domain name for something that I or a client has decided to put online, I figure maybe some of these available domain names that I come up with might just be what someone is looking for. What is SEO?

There’s a pretty good chance that you’ve heard of SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, and it is entirely reasonable to ask what exactly does that mean. SEO means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To some it is the holy grail of making a fortune on the internet. Others think it’s a useless and expensive exercise, often involving expensive consultants who make big promises, do a lot of seemingly magical things to your web site, and then disappear with your money leaving you worse off than you were before. Neither of these really are what SEO is, but to some degree or another they each may have some amount of accuracy. Search Engine Optimization is a part of Search Engine Marketing. The goal of SEO is to make your web site attractive to search engines.
